Incandescence: Rising Above Darkness Excerpt Chapter #29 Different Colored Folks In The Same Cosmos

We talked and laughed for over an hour about her peculiar poodle and how I made my own clothes and about the foods we liked to eat. Finally, when I told her I wanted the apartment, she looked at me seriously and said, “I hope you don’t mind. We are all colored folks here. You would be the first white person to live in this building. But I like you, and if it’s okay with you, it’s okay with me.”

I answered, “I’m colored folk, too, just a different color.”

Laughing, she said, “I like you a lot.” Then she yelled into the next room where Mr. Greenfield was pretending not to be listening, “I told you white folks could be nice.”
