Incandescence: Rising Above Darkness Excerpt Chapter #26 Stevedores On The Unsalted Sea

Behind the Longshoremen’s Hall at five in the morning, the great lake was ominous when I got in the extras line. Lake Superior is to be respected in any season; the depth of its cold can take the warmth of life out of a person in minutes. The unsalted sea is so vast it creates its own weather and does not warm up below the surface.

Perhaps I would not have shown up if I knew what many said, I was the first woman among the longshoremen, the stevedores. But after my family came for a visit, and the court gave me the choice of my four-year-old nephew going into an overcrowded home or me taking responsibility for him, I became highly motivated to increase my income honorably.
