Incandescence: Rising Above Darkness Excerpt Chapter #40 Part II. The Lavender Karate Gi

The first phone conversation with my son filled a dark, cold place with warm light for us both. During our second phone call, we talked of many things before he told me about his dream from the previous night. In the dream, he went shopping for a karate gi with his adoptive mother. He found a purple one and really wanted it, while his adoptive mother tried to talk him out of buying it.

I said, “Right now I am wearing a karate gi that I bought at a used store and dyed lavender. This is the first time I have worn it in years.” Neither of us was surprised that somehow we were connected.     We were strangers who had once resided within the same body. As he spoke of dreams and feelings, I heard myself in him. Everything extraneous fell away in those moments, and only our spirits stood before each other. All things were beautiful and illuminated, even the brutality of his conception transformed into the gift of life. We understood that we had always been wrapped in the strong softness of each other’s love like the mysterious lavender karate gi.
