He looked like a painting of Jesus with his golden hair landing on his shoulders. His eyes were the color of the sea, his flesh tanned by the sun bouncing off the water. He ate no meat and wore nothing made from animals, including his shoes made from recycled tires.

My skin was olive. My nearly black hair had a copper sheen in the sun. My eyes turned from hazel to chestnut with my moods. I made everything I wore by hand with a needle and thread. I did not adorn myself with color, make-up, or jewelry.
