9. Self Publish EBook Print Audio Book
Self-publishing is the ultimate freedom; you control everything about the process and reap the largest royalty.
Having a publisher gives you a huge leg up in distribution and marketing, which can lead to a much higher return, despite the smaller royalty on each book sale. But getting a publisher can be extremely-extremely (yes, I said that twice) difficult, and sometime might not be best for your project, especially if you don’t want to change the writing of your novel from the way you want it.
There are, of course, options between self-publishing and going with a conventional publisher.
Boutique or hybrid publishing companies share the cost and risk with you, the author of the printing and marketing, and you take away a smaller royalty.
Sharing the work in a way that honors its intention is a journey
There are pros and cons to getting a publisher and self-publishing
Every project is unique, and the best way to share it has to be determined
My first published book, The Book of Cranes, was published by Pomegranate Art Books.
At the time, it was not something I considered self-publishing.
By the time I wrote my memoir Incandescence, Rising Above Darkness.
Self-publishing was not only an option, but I felt it was the right way for this project.
Publishers wanted to separate my art and stories into two different books.
I felt strongly that the art between each chapter was important to what the project was about.
Art at the end of every short story as a moment of meditation is key to who I am.
Creative revenue is a way I survived and processed my difficulties to get to thriving.
My art is part of who I am and part of my story.
Creativity has always been crucial to my healing process.
My next book may be best done with a publisher.
Publishers come from a purely financial perspective, what will sell, how to produce it to make the greatest profit, and how long it should be.
What is the most sellable title, cover, forward, or back matter?
How to market, promote, and distribute it?
Perhaps I may redesign my memoir and republish it with a publisher
I had to honor myself and try it true to what I hold most important
But I published it to help others, so if it reaches more, it helps more
This is an important decision only I can make
We all have to consider the pros and cons of our own work and how is best to share it.
